The album is about coming into his own while trying to leave the past behind. New Crown stands for coming into his own, while Old Ways represents many of his old habits and the old ways of people he knew.

The album is a mix of hip-hop, trap, and pop. The tracks tackle themes of being downplayed, having to leave people behind for personal growth, the Black plight, and moving forward. By talking about his past and present, he paints pictures of how he feels and many of his experiences throughout life.
